SI Challenges faced by the Healthcare Industry

An article by Jane Grimson, William Grimson and Wilhelm Hasselbring highlights the Systems Integration (SI) Challenges faced by the Healthcare industry.

These days, one of the major concerns of organizations in the Healthcare system is their inability to share information with other organizations. The need to be able to share data is required for the progress towards efficiency and cost effectiveness.

The authors of the article talk about ways in which SI can and is being used in the Healthcare industry today. The article talks about achieving Federated Healthcare in order to provide greater accessibility to patient information. A couple of examples of middleware components that provide interconnection of distributed systems are also discussed.

In order to have confidence in the use of IT in the Healthcare industry, Security and Confidentiality of sensitive patient data are required. The article lays emphasis on these characteristics and the challenges encountered by them.

There are indeed many challenges with systems integration in healthcare.

It is not enough to develop "cool software" that does all kinds of new and exciting things. Everything must be done, as you have already noted, with security and confidentiality in mind. Anything that can be done technically must be enabled with security controls around it so that only users who are authorized to view, change or perform certain actions can do so.

I used to work for a small EMR company and, in trying to compete in the marketplace, would develop and implement new features before everything was fully tested. It was often our customers who found security flaws in the product. Developers then had to go back and build security in... not really knowing/understanding healthcare policies and rules, so often, the security was designed poorly.

Even then, audit trails were often needed to track who did what and when in a patient's electronic chart. That would be a separate development process. Then this, of course, leads to greater demands in terms of space in the database because we're creating these huge audit trails.

All of the above relates only to a specific health informatics product - EMR. Imagine the complexities, then, of designing proper security features across platforms, across different vendor systems, across different healthcare organizations and departments....

An SI nightmare!

I agree with what you are saying Veronica. There is a lot required to be done in the Healthcare industry. In these fast paced times I feel a lot of companies are taking things such as auditing, processes & security for granted. As is evident from your described experience with the EMR company.
I guess until companies/management realize the importance and act towards making it all happen, the nightmare is not going to end...
