RFID in Healthcare

These days Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is being increasingly used in a number of industries as a tool for integration. One of the fields where this technology is proving to be very useful is the Healthcare industry. RFIDs can be used to monitor the movement of the patient, administering the right medicines to the patients, also to monitor if the right patient is being operated upon or not. It helps track the supplies of medicines/blood samples before and after administering the dosage. Using RFID enables the hospital to track which materials have been used and whether the disposables have been discarded or not. This kind of tracking is possible for every single patient in the hospital.

Here is a video on the use of RFID in Healthcare:

The adoption of RFID technology by the
healthcare industry has been slow. Although
costs are decreasing, many companies are reluctant to invest in a technology not yet widely adopted.RFID applications can provide significant benefits to the healthcare industry. The following paper shows various applications of RFID in healthcare viz; Pharmaceutical Applications, Hospital and Medical Device Company Applications, Patient Tracking, Product tracking etc. http://www.ups-scs.com/solutions/white_papers/wp_RFID_in_healthcare.pdf

The adoption of RFID in healthcare is definitely going to change the healthcare industry. Its good to see new technologies being adopted.

http://www.rfidhealthcare.com/ list the following areas to be directly impacted by the introduction of RFID:

"Asset Management – being able to locate a mobile asset at all times results in better asset utilization which reduces procurement and leases and dramatically reduces the amount of time your valuable staff spends searching for equipment.

Patient Care – being able to correctly identify a patient and know where that patient is at all times results in improved safety and bed placement.

Inventory Management – being able to identify what you actually have in your current inventory and where that inventory is being consumed reduces out-of-stock situations and the amount of consumables not being billed to a patient. "

CIS8070, Pervasive Healthcare Computing, is a required course for all CIS majors (it's replacing either CIS8040 or CIS8050, so you have to take it the next time it's offered). We talked about this stuff in detail in that class - Dr. Varshney teaches it, he rocks!

I am still trying to think how does it integrate different process . I agree that RFID is a wonderful logistic help , but how does it affect the overall integration in health care. Well if you are talking about integrating technology with procedures of health care then may be , but i still find it a weak argument.

My professor today mentioned that most European countries have universal healthcare. This means that everyones healthcare is provided by the state, correct? How much more money do people pay in taxes in Europe than in the U.S.? It would have to be more since their healthcare is covered, right?

I cannot answer the 2nd part of the question...sorry. The importance of health care insurance is not an individualistic motive, as most people think. From a superficial standpoint, it enables you, the patient, to pay less at the time of service, regardless if you paid more or less overall in the insurance plan itself. The real importance of any insurance is the spread of risk among community or plan members, with the assumption that the consequence of the risk is unplanned, unwanted, serious, and can be expensive.

RFID in healthcare and pharmaceuticals has special requirements, unquantifiable benefits (safety, security, reputation, brand protection etc) and sometimes tolerance of longer paybacks for such reasons can often lead to very profitable and worthwhile business for suppliers...
