Human Systems Integration (HSI) is a multidisciplinary field of study composed of several basic areas:
- Human Factors Engineering
- Systems Safety
- Health Hazards
- Personal Survivability
- Manpower
- Training
- Habitability
HSI emphasizes Human considerations as the top priority in systems design to reduce life cycle costs and optimize system performance.
Human Systems Integration is gaining importance in the defense forces (the Air Force, the Navy and the Army). A lot of research is being conducted in these areas and also at NASA, as HSI is believed to provide a number of benefits such as minimizing the cost of ownership throughout a systems life cycle, provide human centered approach to acquisition, etc.

After reading this post, I got a doubt..Why HSI is only used in only these particular areas Air Force, Navy and Army... As mentioned above, HSI is a system design which reduces life cycle costs and also optimizes system performances...
I googled for several HSIs ..But, all HSIs are related to NASA, airforce and military..Why is it not used in other situations?
You have a valid doubt. In fact even I was wondering the same thing earlier. I tried to look for answers but all I could understand was that since it is a relatively new field it is restricted to these areas. Another reason could be since research in HSI requires a lot of funds/money, companies don't find it a worthy investment.
i think this might be because this field is focused towards human - machine integrations. These systems are most prevalently used in the defence forces .An example of this can be Flight simulators and other such systems.
To add to what Avik mentioned.... If we see all the innovations and inventions in the past... we ll find that most of the cutting-edge technologies are developed for/by the military .... best of the innovations are first used by defense and then the befits of technology are passes on to the general public..... well this might one such case ...
hsi includes hci , something that is just not for the military use. HCI finds more acceptance in general public. Most of the computer systems we use, have atleast some of the factors in relevence to HCI.
How does Chu-Hsi's Neo-Confucian philosophy integrate Daoist and Buddhist ideas into Confucianism?
A recently published book and follow-up article on "Multitasking" provide insight into the complex nature of cockpit operations
This is really a awesome post.
Very pleased to find this site. I wanted to thank you for this great read!!
